Jenkins Foundation

The Jenkins Foundation is a supporting organization of TCF whose mission is to improve the health of greater Richmond.

The inspiration for the Jenkins Foundation is found in the story of Annabella Ravenscroft Jenkins, a 19th century pioneer who opened her home to wounded soldiers during the Civil War. Her concern for the medically underserved led to the establishment of Retreat Hospital for the Sick, which provided health care on a sliding fee scale. Today, the Jenkins Foundation embodies that same spirit of compassion and caring in its work, applying her vision to modern day challenges.

The Jenkins Foundation is focused on equitable access to health care services, as well as programs that help reduce risky behaviors and promote safe and healthy environments. The result is a more efficient health care delivery system and a safer, healthier and more productive community.

What We Look For

Eligibility

Proposals will be accepted from charitable organizations, which serve the residents of the City of Richmond and the counties of Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico, Goochland, and Powhatan.

Grant Priorities

The Foundation’s funding priorities fall under two focus areas:

I. Access to Health Care Services
The Foundation’s primary goal is to promote community health by supporting access to the following:

  • primary care
  • mental health care
  • oral health care
  • health education and prevention services

II. Key Community Health Issues
The Foundation seeks to further enhance the health of the community by reducing risky behaviors and promoting safe and healthy environments. In this focus area, the Foundation supports:

  • Substance abuse treatment and prevention
  • Violence prevention
  • Unintended pregnancy prevention

In addition, the Foundation is committed to the long-term viability of the organizations it supports, and will consider capacity building grants that strengthen an agency’s ability to better serve its clients. The Foundation will also consider a limited number of proposals outside the above stated focus areas.

Grant Amount

Generally, grants of up to $75,000 will be awarded. The Foundation will also identify a limited number of projects for greater funding.

How to Apply

The Jenkins Foundation uses an online application process for nonprofits seeking support through the competitive grants program.

Step 1. Submit a preliminary proposal.

If eligible, organizations may submit a brief summary proposal through our online grants system by the stated deadline. First-time applicants will be prompted to create an account first.

Upcoming deadline for preliminary proposals for the Jenkins Winter 2018 grant cycle is November 6. Please mark your calendar to also apply for the Community Foundation's 2018 grant cycle, opening in January.

Step 2. Submit a full proposal. (By invitation only)

Following a vetting process, select organizations are invited to submit a full proposal. To be considered further, you must have a complete and up-to-date portrait on GiveRichmond.

3. Submit final report.

Grantees must submit a final report one year from the date of the grant award using the same online grants system used to apply. Results should align with the metrics outlined in your original proposal.
