Cultivating a Love for the Great Outdoors

Watching children marvel at the beauty of nature while digging in the garden or hiking through the woods brings Mary Arginteanu immense joy. For decades she and her husband, Larry, dedicated much of their time and talent volunteering at several local schools mentoring students and providing opportunities for nature exploration. As Mary grew older, it became more challenging for her to upkeep the community gardens she had created at South Hampton and Swansboro Elementary Schools. She was familiar with The Community Foundation and contacted our philanthropic services team to explore ways to keep her outdoor program alive.

In 2014 Mary and Larry worked alongside the Foundation’s staff to identify an organization whose mission and vision were closely aligned with their own. Greater Richmond Fit4Kids seemed to be the perfect match. “I would not have found this partnership without TCF,” said Mary, “Fit4Kids continues to exceed my expectations. They are pragmatic and teach children through hands-on learning.” Through the creation of the No Child Left Inside Fund at The Community Foundation, Mary and Larry are now able to provide grant funding to Greater Richmond Fit4Kids and continue their mission to provide outdoor educational experiences for students. “TCF is the perfect solution for donors like me. They were able to understand my goals and align my vision with greater needs in the community,” said Mary.
