Dick and Judy Nelson
Dick and Judy Nelson sat around a table with their two daughters, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. They discussed their dreams for the future and ways they could make a difference together. The conversation, while vivid in their memories, took place over a decade ago at an annual meeting of their family business. It was important to Dick to share his philosophy that running a successful company is not simply about providing personalized service and quality products, but also about giving back to the community in a meaningful way.
Dick Nelson is now retired and the business has been sold, but the giving endures through the Nelco Family Foundation Fund. A third generation now has a seat at the table, offering fresh perspective and bolstering enthusiasm for the family’s philanthropy. At a recent meeting hosted by The Community Foundation, the family had a chance to hear Marissa, a dancer, express her interest in the arts. Steffi, who wants to be a pediatric oncology nurse, is concerned with children suffering from cancer. A college student, Bradley is passionate about the prevention of drunk driving and drug abuse.
All three generations wish to deepen their involvement by participating in volunteer projects organized by HandsOn Greater Richmond, a program of the Partnership for Nonprofit Excellence. By getting their hands dirty, they will create a bonding experience that allows them to share their own unique talents while making connections to nonprofits who are doing good work.
