Northside Initiative for Older Youth
In 2007, The Community Foundation conducted a community-wide needs assessment that uncovered a gap in services for older youth as they transition to adulthood, despite the high level of need. The Northside Initiative for Older Youth was developed to address this need in a targeted and measurable way.
The goal of the Northside Initiative for Older Youth is to provide programs and services that help young people ages 14 to 24 achieve self-sufficiency. To further this goal, TCF has committed $1 million over five years to support programs that focus on education and training, goal setting, employability and support services.
The Northside Initiative is currently in its second year of implementation.
The Goal
For all children and youth to grow into productive and socially responsible adults.
Our Partners
The Community Foundation identified five partner agencies that provide programs and services for youth at different stages along the targeted age spectrum. Youth range from middle school students transitioning to high school to youth who have dropped out of high school and are seeking employment.
The partners are:
- Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond
- F.I.R.S.T. Contractors
- J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College
- North Richmond YMCA
- William Byrd Community House
These organizations meet with staff of The Community Foundation on a bi-monthly basis to share accomplishments related to the work of the initiative and to discuss opportunities for further collaboration. The goal is to encourage resource sharing when it helps to further the mission of the organizations, as well as the goals of the Northside Initiative.
