John E. Thomasson Scholarship

Description

The John E. Thomasson Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 to support post-secondary educational opportunities for youth of African American or other minority heritage in the Louisa County (Virginia) Public Schools or Fluvanna County (Virginia) Public Schools. Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis to students who have been admitted to an accredited two-year technical school, four-year Historically Black College or University or the school of their choice. Preference will be given to applicants planning to attend St. Paul’s College, Virginia State University, Hampton University, Virginia Union University, or Norfolk State University.

Eligibility

An eligible student must be enrolled at a high school in Louisa County or Fluvanna County at the start of the student's senior academic year. Students who transfer to the school during their senior year are not eligible.

An eligible student must demonstrate solid academic work, leadership, personal integrity, and financial need.

An eligible student must be a candidate for high school graduation at the end of the current academic year and plan to enroll in an accredited two-year technical school, four-year Historically Black College or University or the school of their choice.

How Winners Are Chosen

Involvement in extracurricular and community service activities;

Academic achievement based on grade point average and SAT scores

Commitment to family, religious values and school life based on personal statement;

Faculty or guidance counselor recommendation
