Raymond F. Burmester Endowment for Scholastic Achievement Scholarship

Description

The Raymond F. Burmester Endowment for Scholastic Achievement was established in 1996 by Raymond F. Burmester for the benefit of three graduating seniors at Northumberland High School, Heathsville, Virginia.  Two recipients with the highest scholastic class standing will be selected based on the criteria outlined below.  A third recipient may be selected by the River Counties Scholarship Committee, based on scholastic class standing and financial need.

Eligibility

An eligible student must be a senior attending Northumberland High School, PO Box 40, Heathville, Virginia 22473.

Scholarships are restricted to students with a class standing within the upper twenty percentile of their class. Academic career pursuit, leadership qualities, financial need, personality, or popularity are not factors for consideration.

Matriculation into a four-year Virginia state supported (publicly subsidized) college or university is the second of two factors for eligibility for this scholarship. This scholarship shall not be used to attend a two-year, private, or out-of-state college.

Prohibitions for eligibility include:

The scholarship shall not be awarded in conjunction with a scholarship awarded for athletic prowess.

This scholarship may be denied to anyone who, in the opinion of the principal or guidance counselor, transferred to Northumberland High School during their junior or senior year because of these scholarships.

This scholarship shall not be awarded to the Valedictorian if the Valedictorian is awarded scholarships restricted exclusively for Valedictorians that sum to 75 percent or more of this scholarship.

Other considerations:

This scholarship shall be awarded in conjunction with other scholastic achievement and/or financial-aid scholarships but is restricted to room, board, and/or tuition. This scholarship may be used at any time and in any combination during the student's enrollment in a qualifying college.

If there is a tie among eligible students regarding class standing which creates a situation where there are more students eligible than there are scholarships, the amount of the scholarship for students with the lower class standing shall be shared equally among those with the lower class standing.
